Fitted Kitchens:

The kitchen is usually the most expensive area of the house to renovate and is the area where you will need to think very carefully about how the finished article will look. The tendency, were space allows, is to opt for an open plan style, often removing the need for a separate dining room. Planning is vitally important and our Cad Designers are able to offer free expert help and ideas as to how to approach the design. There are some simple things to remember such as remembering that cooker extraction needs an outside wall to vent to, fridges should be kept away from heat sources and that you will need some worktop space either side of the sink and cooker.

The variety of kitchen designs available is vast and it can be very confusing with so many options available to choose from. While a hand built kitchen might cost less than you think, there are some incredible continental designs as well as excellent quality flat pack kitchens, which can look superb, yet be fitted on a tight budget.

Before you start, consider the following:

  • Think of the way you will use the kitchen and layout that this will require, applying this to the available space.
If the kitchen is going to be a food preparation area only because you have a separate dining room, you can keep the space more functional if you prefer. However, the current mode is to make the kitchen a main living area, a space where the family congregates and eats, as well as just preparing food, so design becomes more significant if the kitchen is not to become cluttered and noisy.
It has become the norm for sinks to be positioned beneath windows and for appliances to be arranged to form a “working triangle” between cooker, sink & fridge. Try not to put too much distance between these appliances to make it convenient to move between the 3 points.

Take care not to locate sinks and cookers in corners, as this restricts working room.

Uneven floors and walls can be compensated for by adjustable legs that are fitted as standard on most modern kitchen cabinets (excludes flat-pack ranges).

Worktops can be cut to follow the profile of uneven walls.
Remember that most kitchen appliances fit into a 600mm space, and that units are normally to be found in sizes ranging from 300mm wide through 400, 500, 600, and 1000mm.
